Six Common Plumbing Emergencies: Part Two

Plumbing emergencies unfortunately happen. If you’re like most people, they happen just when you are relying on your indoor plumbing the most! Last week, we talked about the first three most common plumbing emergencies. Today let’s discuss the other three.

Frozen or burst pipes

Winter is coming. And winter on the Canadian Prairies is not kind to water. Although modern homes are far more insulated and less likely to have issues with freezing pipes, older homes can still experience this problem, as can homes with a heating issue during a very cold period. When the water inside of a pipe freezes, the pressure build up can cause it to also burst.

Cold aside, pipes can also burst simply because they are very old or made with inappropriate materials. Corrosion on pipes, especially from a long-standing leak, can also eventually burst. While a burst pipe can be dramatic, it isn’t always. Look for wet spots on the wall or ceiling, or sudden spikes in water bills. If you suddenly have no water in one area of the house, consider if your pipes could be frozen. These are all plumbing emergencies, and you should call us immediately.

Sump pump failures

Your sump pump is one of the unsung heroes of your house. If you have a basement or a crawl space, you probably have a sump pump, working to keep water away from your foundation and preventing leaking, flooding, and extensive damage. In the spring when things begin to thaw, or during rainy seasons, your sump pump is working hard to save you headaches. Periodically checking on your sump pump, especially in the spring or if you are expecting rain, is important. If it isn’t working, you should contact us.

Sewer backup

Sewer backups are not only unpleasant – the smell! – but indicate serious problems. If you don’t address these issues, it can affect not only the health of your home, but of the people and pets living in the space. Pay attention to things like gurgling toilets, multiple drains with clogs, water pooling in the basement floor drains, and bad odours coming from any drain. Make sure you address clogs immediately, so the issue doesn’t cause further problems.

Plumbing issues are never fun to deal with, but you will probably encounter something on this list at some point in your life. Always know where your water shut off valves are and recognize when it’s time to call in the professionals!
