Dishwasher Maintenance Tips
Dishwashers help reduce the amount of scrubbing pots and pans and make life easier. Proper dishwasher maintenance is crucial to help extend your dishwasher’s lifespan and keep it running as effectively as possible.
Don’t ignore the filter
Most dishwashers have a filter located at the bottom of the appliance that traps food remnants and debris. If this gets clogged, it can lead to poor drainage as well as smelly odours that our nose endures when the door opens!
You can clean the filter by removing it by gently twisting or pulling it out. Then, rinse it under warm water and lightly scrub the filter with a soft brush to remove any unwanted gunk.
Check the spray arms
Did you know that your dishwasher has arms? These arms distribute water over your dishes. If these critical pieces get clogged with food or mineral deposits, it can impact performance and hinder how clean your dishes get during the washing cycle.
To maintain your spray arms, remove and inspect the holes for any blockages. You can use a toothpick or small brush to give them a thorough clean. Soaking them in vinegar can also help remove mineral build-up.
Run a cleaning cycle
Running an empty cycle using white vinegar is a great and natural way to keep the inside of your dishwasher squeaky clean. Doing this will help eliminate grease, limescale, and soap residue that can be left behind.
Simply pour approximately two cups of white vinegar into a dishwasher safe bowl and place it on the top rack. Run the dishwasher on its hottest cycle for optimal results.
Check the drain
In some cases, you might find that your dishwasher isn’t draining properly. Check to ensure the drain hose is clear and that there’s nothing blocking the drainage area.
Look for leaks
After each use, check around the door for any signs of leaks or moisture. If you notice anything, you might need to replace the rubber door gasket.
Don’t forget the exterior
The outside of your dishwasher gets dirty too! Use a mild cleaner and a soft cloth to keep it nice and clean. This way, your dishwasher stays looking nice and runs efficiently.
To ensure you are getting the most out of your dishwasher, keep these tips in mind as well:
Always ensure items are labeled as “dishwasher safe”
Don’t overload your dishwasher as this can result in poorly washed dishes (and nobody wants that!)
Load dishes properly, ensuring items are securely placed and silverware is separated for optimal cleaning
Keep your trusty sidekick well maintained, and you will avoid dishwasher mishaps, keep your dishwasher running smoothly and your dishes sparkling.
