Plumbing Checklist for Homeowners
At Action Plumbing and Heating, we want to ensure we are your go-to team to call when you need assistance most. However, we also want to arm you with important knowledge that can help safeguard your home and prevent severe incidents or damage. With that in mind, we put together this handy list to perform simple checks around your house that can help identify potential issues and seek proactive action if necessary.
Watch for leaks
It is important to regularly check for leaks or unwanted water around your home. Even the slightest sign of water in places it shouldn’t be can mean trouble. Therefore, do the following to help ensure you catch small problems before they become big ones:
Inspect under your sinks, around toilets, and near appliances for signs of water leaks.
Look closely for water stains on the walks or ceilings, which can mean a potential pipe leak.
Check faucets and fixtures
Test and visually inspect all faucets for leaks.
Make sure that handles are easy to turn and that there is no dripping from the faucets.
Check drainage sources for clogs or wear.
Maintain and inspect your toilet fixtures
The toilets in your bathrooms are used often, and you certainly want to make sure that they are in functional and optimal working order! Do the following to ensure they continue to flush and operate efficiently:
Check for leaks around the base of the toilet.
Test the flushing mechanisms in every toilet to ensure it’s working properly.
Keep an eye out for signs of water damage around the toilet.
Watch for slow draining or low water levels in the bowl.
Watch your water heater
There are a few things to consider ensuring your water heater is working accordingly:
Investigate the area around the water heater for any leaks.
Make sure the pressure relief valve is functioning properly.
Listen for any unusual noises.
Perform regular maintenance and service according to the manufacturer directions.
Don’t ignore your drains
Ensuring that water is draining properly in your home is essential! Keep these steps in mind when investigating your drains:
Note that all drains (sinks, showers, tubs, etc.) are draining properly.
Use drain covers to reduce the debris that goes down your drain, and clean regularly.
Pipe power
Your pipes are essential to your home, so you don’t want to ignore them. Look for the following:
Signs of corrosion or rust.
Check for any unusual bulges, leaks, or dampness.
A few more tips:
Regularly test your water pressure in faucets and showers.
Look for signs of mold or mildew (especially in areas like the basement or under your sinks).
Pay attention to changes in water quality such as colour, odour or taste.
Locate and ensure you know where and how to use your main shut off valve in case of emergency!
Keeping an eye out for potential issues can make a significant difference when it comes to your plumbing. However, remember that while this checklist can help identify common issues, it’s important to consult with professionals and conduct throughout inspections and maintenance.
