Water Heater Fuel Sources
The source of energy for a water heater can be electrical, natural gas or propane. Electric water heaters have the lowest upfront cost but highest operating cost. Natural gas and propane, will cost less over time but requires a natural gas line to work. You can also have a water heater that uses solar energy but the set up and system costs are still substantial and take years to recover any costs.
Types of Water Heaters
Storage Tank- By far the most common type of water heater due to their lower install cost. However they are less energy efficient than other options. You will want an insulated tank to reduce heat loss and operating costs.
Tankless- Hot water never runs out and is 8-34% more energy efficient than a storage tank. They down side is a lesser flow rate of hot water but will accommodate a 2 full bathroom house no problem.
Solar- 50% more efficient than electric or gas water heaters. However they may require a backup system if you have high demand or excessive cloudy days. (not typical for the average household)
