Plumbing Tips for Winter Storms
Winter weather is tough on people, and it’s also tough on our plumbing systems! Being prepared is essential to help avoid costly damage. Today, let’s chat about some of our top tips for handling plumbing issues during a winter storm, ensuring your home stays warm and dry.
Know how to turn off the water
In the event of an emergency, especially if your pipes freeze or burst, shut off your home’s water supply quickly. This can minimize water damage and prevent further problems.
Your main water shutoff valve is usually found in the basement, or near the water meter. Familiarize yourself with its location so you are prepared if an emergency arises. To shut off the water, turn the valve clockwise. If it is difficult to turn, using a pipe wrench might help make it easier. Be careful not to use too much force, as this could cause damage to the valve.
After you have shut off the main water supply, open all faucets in your home to release any pressure and allow water to drain from the pipes. If you have a hot water heater, consider turning it off to prevent damage when no water flows through it.
Protect your pipes
When the water inside of your pipes freezes, it expands, causing them to crack or burst. Insulate your pipes by applying pipe insulation to vulnerable areas such as those located in exterior walls, attics, basements, and garages. You can also use foam pipe insulation or heat tape to help prevent freezing.
If you have sinks located in exterior walls, you can open the cabinet doors beneath the sink to allow warmer air to circulate around the pipes.
Dealing with frozen pipes
If you suspect a pipe is frozen, act quickly! First, identify the location of the frozen pipe. You may notice that faucets aren’t delivering water, or the water pressure is lower than usual. Trace the affected area back to the section of the pipe that is frozen. Check first in unheated spots like basements, attics or exterior walls. You can use a hair dryer or space heater to gently warm the frozen pipe.
