Winter Tips for Your Hot Water Tank

Nobody likes a cold shower, especially during the winter months! There’s nothing more unpleasant than expecting a nice hot shower or bath to enjoy, only to be greeted with a freezing cold stream from the tap. To help ensure your hot water tank runs efficiently and is well-prepared for winter, we want to offer some of our tips.

Check the temperature

To ensure your hot water tank is working optimally, you’ll want to check the temperature setting. Therefore, keep your hot water tank set to 60°C (140°F). This temperature is safe and efficient, and helps prevent overheating during the cold months when the demand for hot water increases.

Inspect for leaks

As we are aware, the long winter months can cause stress on pipes and tanks. Be sure to check for any signs of leaks around the tank, especially around the base. If you find any issues, deal with the problem immediately to prevent water damage.

Flush the tank

Sediment can accumulate at the bottom of the tank, which can reduce efficiency. Drain your hot water heater once a year (more frequently if you have hard water) to flush out any debris and keep the heating elements, or burner, operating smoothly.

Check the anode rod

The anode rod, which is located inside the tank, helps prevent rust and corrosion. During the colder month, it’s important to inspect it regularly (especially if your tank is older). If you find signs of wear and tear, replace it immediately.

Ensure proper ventilation

If you have a gas water heater, make sure the venting system is clear of snow or ice blockages. Poor ventilation can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup, so it’s important for the safety of your family and your home.

Insulate the pipes

Insulate the pipes that connect to the water heater, especially those that fun through unheated areas like the attic or in crawl spaces. This will help prevent freezing and maintain water temperature.

Consider hot water demand

It’s important to be mindful of water usage throughout the winter month. If you are using a significant amount of water, such as when family is visiting during the holidays, be prepared for a potential delay in the recovery of hot water. In these instances, it’s a good idea to spread out the usage of hot water for showers, running the dishwasher or doing laundry.

Call a professional

If you find that your water heater is old, or showing signs of ineffectiveness, schedule a professional inspection with the Action Plumbing team. This can help prevent expensive repairs or a replacement during the winter.

Some signs that there might be an issue with your water heater might include:

  • Decrease in water pressure

  • Water heating inconsistently, or taking longer than usual

  • Discolouration or odour when you run the hot water

  • Increase in water bill

You might also want to think about a tankless water heater. Tankless water heaters provide continuous hot water while saving energy and money, which makes them an attractive option for many homeowners. Our team would be happy to discuss your options.

By following these tips, you can help ensure your hot water tank is ready to handle the demands of winter, while also maintaining energy efficiency and longevity.
